Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has increased their focus on family reunification during the past year. CIC encourages permanent residents and citizens of Canada to reunite with their families through sponsorship applications. Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR), family living abroad as well as spouses or common-law partners living in Canada with their sponsor may be sponsored under the family class category. Parents and grandparents can also be sponsored through the Parent and Grandparent Program.
The person who is sponsoring a family member is called the Sponsor and the family member being sponsored is known as the Applicant.
In order to qualify for a sponsorship application, both the sponsor and the applicant need to be eligible.
In the past, CIC had set a quota on the number of parent and grandparent applications they would accept. However, as of December 2016, CIC has made significant changes regarding how sponsorship applications are going to be submitted under the program.
Those individuals who wish to sponsor their parents or grandparents to Canada are now required to complete an online form to indicate their interest to CIC. They will have 30 days from January 3, 2017 to fill out the form. Once the 30 days are completed, CIC will proceed to randomly select 10,000 individuals. Those individuals will be invited to send their complete application package to CIC for processing.
